What if we’re meant to grow old with our things?
‘Sorrento, 2025’ is inspired by the belief that we leave traces of ourselves within treasured possessions, that they are evidence of our personal history, of a time and place, that they tell a story of who we are. ‘Sorrento, 2025’ depicts an old, well-loved bicycle leaning against a crumbling wall in the streets of Sorrento, Italy. The bicycle has been leant carefully against the wall by the owner, the handle bar the only support, as sunlight illuminates the frame and casts shadows across the vintage herringbone tile beneath. Locals chat in a cafe nearby accompanied by the sound of many footsteps treading the tile and the sea in the distance. The crumbling plaster and cracked tiles anchor the scene within time, indicating a shared human history and a sense of place, while the use of light and shade is employed to represent the highs and lows of a human life, a complete and nuanced story.
