Inspired by a supermarket trip on a rainy, January day, ‘How Could I Not?’ explores the idea of temptation and the role pomegranates have played in human history and myth. In Greek mythology, Hades tempts Persephone with pomegranate seeds, giving rise to the seasons. Having eaten the pomegranate seeds, Persephone must remain in the underworld for half the year, creating winter. I gave in to pomegranates in a similar way when I saw them in the supermarket and had to paint them. We all need a bit of colour in the grey. Temptation is an integral part of being human, an invite to exercise our free will without the pressure of virtue, and that’s OK.
